Holy water - Weihwasser

Photos are better if seen LARGE.

I finished the piece I was working on.

It is one of my "serious" :-) ones. I would like to explain the process.

I noticed I work in a kind of brainstorming way. Beginning with one idea and my favorite techniques I begin setting a scene. This time I was thinking of the woods and of the fable creatures people of all nationalities and traditions place there.

The next association were the "Marterl". These are a kind of religious monuments you can find in the landscape, in the fields or in the woods in Austria. They are places to commemorate someone who happened to die at this place because of an accident or mere places of worship.

I always wonder when I find one of them during a hike tour what kind of believe moved these people to put such an anachronistic object in the middle of a landscape. They show Madonnas in full attire, souls roasting in purgatory, bishops in gold and silver... and I was thinking about fables and superstitions... but, which is which??? somehow I find that the elves are nearer to the woods ...

And then there is this source in the wood where we fetched a healing water (well, my husband did as he had his head operation) and which is now only working because they're pumping the water up with a pumping device (the miracle source disappeared some years ago), and there are these kiosk at Mariazell, Altötting (Holy Mary Sanctuaries in Austria and Baviera) which I visit when I happen to be near to them because of the atmosphere they have, full of candles and "milagros" hanging from the walls.

Scapularies and Milagros are sold everywhere, they hang from the kiosks and in the churches, people wear them and buy them. The ones who are going to the purgatory and the ones who sleep into heaven...

And of course I was thinking about these altar painting where the bad ones burn in the fire and the good ones are surrounded by clouds!!!

"Serious" :-) - "Ernst" :-)

I'm doing something else once more. I had enough from colors. I always like etchings as an art form and this is the one thing that inspires this kind of work.

I also like the framed pieces done this way.

These are two details of the piece I'm working on. They are very small, the appliqué leaf is about 1/4"x1/2".

I'm using your fabrics, Jude. Now I found a way to incorporate them into my work.

Now I go to the studio and continue working...!

Ich habe wieder was Anderes gemacht.

I liebe diese Stücke einzurahmen.

Creativity Banner Swap -

Dream Garland

COMPLETE - NO MORE PLACES!!

Now, at the beginning of winter, I always have time for a swap.

Last year I organized the inchies swap (Dot's idea!) and now I'm thinking about a "Creativity" banner swap.

Here is the invitation for you and rules:

We need 10 participants because the work "CREATIVITY" has 10 letters.

Each of us would do one letter of this word. For instance I would do 10 times the letter "A" in the chosen colors (each participant can choose a color: a main color for the background and a color for the letter)

You would have time till the end of January to send it to me and I would send you back the whole work in your colors. You can hang it as you wish.

I would send a template to the participants and you can use whatever you wish for the background: fabric, felt, fabric paper, .... For the letters you can use the style and size you wish so that all the letters are going to be different. You only have to try to have some contrast between background and letter so that you can read it well.

The first 10 ones are in. Because I had 2 ladies last year who didn't complete the swap I would rather have ladies who write often comments to my blog than new ones. You can introduce a friend though, if you know someone who would be interested.

Well... you can send me a mail to my email address in my profile! I hope you are interested!
Tomorrow I will send the exact rules and open a discussion blog like I did for the swap of 2006.
The fee for shipping, packaging and regie will be 15 US$.

Poll joyfull vs. serious - Umfrage lustig gegen ernst

I'm always struggling about which way to follow...

These last months I did almost only joyfull art but this is only a part of me, I have a huge contradictory part of me that is more dark.

I would like you to answer the question on the right hand side if you want to give an opinion.

I actually know what I want to do but perhaps I should have two different blogs if some people are "scared" with my darker self! :-)

Flying back home - Zurück nach Hause fliegen

My story with these fairies has no end. Now the little fairy who learned to fly is tired from flying and the mother had to fetch a bird to carry her home...

After that they rested on their little quilt in the nest.

I stamped"Fairy Nest" on self made paper.

I have discovered a way to do the bird somehow "round" without the seams showing. It looks like wet felted!

Flying - Fliegen

Now I show the little fairy who wanted to fly already flying!

I did a pendant with three small pendants more because I found these metal barrettes which looked so appropriate.

The piece is 4"x3 3/4" (10x9 cm) and hangs nicely.

Another possibility

Yesterday I did this pendant with a cord for a more minimalistic taste.

It is about 2 1/2"x2 3/4"(6x7cm)

Work progress

Now Blogger allows me to open bigger files, it has really moods...

I want to share the work I'm doing now, because it's going to take some time till I finish it. It's going to be a big piece, this is now about 20" (50cm) wide.

It hasn't a title yet. She's not "the" Madonna, she is our idea of the Madonna.

I must say that I'm more inspired by the crown of Moctezuma, which is unjustly kept in an Austrian museum.

I am always having problems with light these days because there was no sun.

Today is a sunny day, great! so I decided to take once more the photo I took yesterday by electric light.

I also ordered yesterday at Ebay a photocube with spots to see if I can take better photos on dark days.

Now then, this is something new. I just couldn't upload these images the same size as the one I took yesterday. Blogger wouldn't let me do it! I can't understand why this is happening and I hope it's not going to last!! Now you can't see the difference because the photos are much smaller...

If you want to see them bigger you must go to my Flickr album.

Flight lesson

Yesterday I found a bag full of... fibers (I think it's hemp...) in my stash. I collect everything that looks "usable" and then I forget about it. You know how it works...

Well, I began to try to make a basis fabric with it, mixing it with other materials, like wool, paper, tulle and other ones that looked good for blending in this background.

I was very happy with the result and made this picture on it.

The little fairy is waiting to take her first flight lesson. She looks a little bit skeptical about it.
I wonder if fairies take flight lessons in winter...

More photos - Mehr Fotos

I promised to take more photos. The light wasn't bright enough though... they could be better.

Crypt for a dead flower - Krypta für eine tote Blume

This is a major work I worked on this summer. I wanted to send it to Art of the Stitch but then it didn't turn out like a thing they would like to have for the exhibition because it isn't "modern" enough. I understand that.

You ought to see the large size of the photos if you want to see the details.

I'm going to take more photos when the sun shines, because you can't actually see the dead flower very clearly. She is buried in a little pouch and if you take it in your hand you can feel the "bones" inside.

The special thing was that I used only the embellisher to "sew" all the layers and pieces and only did hand embroidery. I only used a zig-zag to embed wires for stability.

You can close it with the vines so that you have a box in the box. You can take the dead flower out of the crypt. There are some lose petals around the grave.

I wanted to show that life comes after death in a perpetual circle and that beauty springs out from decay.
It is about 20"x10"(50x25cm)(opened) and it's meant to be put in a glas cube if possible.

It has very fine materials, small white pearls, and the vines offer the possibility to open or close the construction the way you wish it.

Icicle

Yesterday I wanted to do an icicle after all this talking about them. Belinda began with this great idea and it spread in the Web like fire.

Because I wanted it to hang free I did a branch support for it.

The best thing that happened was that now I (think) I really know what I want to do in the future. You know I'm already struggling a while with this issue and I always think I have it and then I don't quite have it...

This time the thing is getting more and more appealing to me. I don't want to speak about it before I'm quite sure but I see some things clearer than before and everything is in the same line of thinking I had all these last years. We'll see...

I'll keep you informed!
